Become a Forensic Pathologist.

A breath of fresh air.

You finally finished High school! Therefore, you sent your applications to a few universities in the province of Quebec. Since you've always dreamed of becoming a Physician, you gave it a try and sent applications to McGill University, the University of Laval in Quebec, and the University of Montreal. After a couple of months went by, you received emails informing you about your admission. You then had to decide which one of the responses to open among the three. Which one did you choose?

Choice 1 : Open the email from the University of Laval in Quebec.

Choice 2 : Open the email from McGill University.

Choice 3 : Open the email of the University of Montreal.

email

Open the email from the University of Laval in Quebec.

You chose to open the email of this university even if it is a three-hour drive away from your home because you knew you would still be able to pull off good life experiences, away from what you already knew in your hometown. Although you had good grades, you did not quite make the best impression in your interview during April. For that reason, you got rejected from this program at this school. However, it was something you suspected that would likely happen, but you were still disappointed.

Choice 1 : Start over

Ulaval

Open the email from McGill University.

You chose to open the email from McGill University and, SURPRISE, you were selected for their medical program to become a Doctor! You had a strong feeling of accomplishment, even though it only was the beginning of a long path for the future. So, you could either accept the offer or still go for one of the other schools.

Choice 1 : Accept.

Choice 2 : Decline.

McGill

Open the email of the University of Montreal.

It was the one university that you really wanted to go to besides McGill, therefore you were impatient to see the answer. You opened it, and it made your day, you had been picked out to be a part of the new cohort of the future Physicians. You have been staying at your house since you were a kid, and you felt like you wanted to try something new. You began to think about moving out to the school's residency. Hence, you had to make a choice.

Choice 1 : Stay at your house.

Choice 2 : Live in the residency.

UdeM

Uncomfortable.

It had been three months since it had started. Undesired messages, inappropriate comments, and unwanted behaviors kept happening. You had had enough of this situation. You could either go talk to him directly to clear things up, or speak to your superior about it.

Choice 2 : Face your colleague.

harassment

Decline.

You realized that maybe it would be better for you if you went to another school seeing that it was the strictest one of all, you had to have straight A's in all of your classes if you wanted to even have the chance to succeed there.

Choice 1 : Try again

Decline

Accept.

You had accepted the offer to do your medical studies at McGill University. Great! Yet, you had a lot of difficulty understanding the subject matters in your classes because you couldn't fully grasp the concepts in English since French was your first language. It got to a point where you ended up being too far behind in school and hadn't been able to catch up.

Live in the residency.

You had much more freedom and enjoyed it as much as you could. You started going out often with your new friends from school. It got to a point where your parents told you : '' If I were you, I would focus more on my studies. '' That made you face a dilemma, and you had to make a choice. What did you settle on?

Choice 1 : Listen to your relatives.

Stay at your house.

You have been able to go through your four years of doctorate. With determination and organisation, you have been prioritizing your studies. All the times you had to do overtime for your homework, all the times people tried to withhold in group projects, it finally paid off. Then, you needed to select the internship that you wanted to do, to specialize in a medical field. Which one did you chose?

Choice 1 : Anatomical pathology.

Choice 2 : Forensic pathology.

graduation

Anatomical pathology.

This was a five-year-long internship, where you had a foot in the door to the medical specialty focused on diagnosing diseases. You examined organs, tissues and cells for structural abnormalities to find out what was affecting what you were inspecting. It is one of the most important skills to have to be able to detect cancer in a patient's body. During your second year in this program, you saw another student make a mistake that may have cost a patient's life. You wondered if you should've told the Physician in charge. What did you do?

Choice 1 : Expose him.

Choice 2 : Don't say anything.

Months went by, and you learned how to examine a body and determine the cause of death. You have seen cases where someone had died of an anaphylactic shock, of convulsions, of diabetes and much more. All of your thoughts were spiraling in your head. Did you really want to quit? Was it really worth it? Even if you had once believed that medicine was your calling, the pressure left you unsure. You tried to understand if it were really the profession that you were looking for or if you just wanted to challenge yourself, but was getting too overwhelmed.

The thought of leaving a such beautiful and human career made you sick. After all, you really wanted to help those who needed that help. Go back to University.

You went back to school to finish your degree. You learned a lot during those years. You've had to prescribe pills to patients. In your emergency internship, you've had to do a cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the first time left a mark in your brain since you really felt the ribs of the patient break when doing it. You really enjoyed having the chance to come back and learn even more about the human body, and how to save a person's life.

Choice 1 : Graduate.

Expose him.

You went to the teacher, who is a Physician, and you explained what had happened. You were looking at a patient's tissue sample, and noticed that he wasn't really doing what he was supposed to. He was always gone, probably to the bathroom, which lead to him not having enough time to examine his patient's tissue. Therefore, he wrote in his report that everything seemed fine, that there was no trace of an anomaly in it. Days later, his patient died of an undiagnosed condition, that would have been easily avoidable if he had done his job properly. The teacher thanked you, and he took care of the situation. After that, nothing like that ever happened again during your internship.

Choice 1 : Go through your second internship.

Don't say anything.

The Physicians in charge of your group noticed that your colleague had not worked properly, and that ended up with the death of a patient. Since you had noticed, but didn't notify it to them, you were suspended from your internship, and later expelled. After all, teamwork and communication are key aspects of this job.

Go through your second internship.

Next step, your second internship! Forensic pathology! It was by far the most interesting one of all for you. You had to examine bodies of crime scenes to establish the cause of death. You even helped people who were victims of sexual abuse. You realized that being a forensic pathologist was really something that brought you confidence, and you could help people on another level, going through grief and being in a hopeless state. After finishing your last internship, you knew that's what you wanted to be.

You went straight to HR to address the situation. You had high hopes of solving the problem with their help. Rather, they tried to cover up for him, so he didn't get in trouble because he was one of the best students. It seemed to be the first time that you had encountered corruption. Then, it pushed you to file a lawsuit against that team, and you won. You decided that you still wanted to finish your degree, and began a campaign to fight for more support for women in healthcare. Later on, you focused mainly on your campaign and slowly let down your project of being a doctor.

Even though you had anticipated this moment, nothing went as you expected. You confronted him, and as you were speaking to him, you noticed a change in his facial expressions.
